Should I use a tag or dashes if the audio cuts out?

If the audio completely cuts out to the point that no speech can be heard, we prefer to use double dashes. If the audio just becomes terribly garbled, use the [inaudible] tag for what you can't make out.

For example, if the audio completely cuts out and you can't hear the first speaker:

So I went up to him because he looked-- out of a swamp.
I'm sorry, you broke up a bit. He looked what?
He looked like he had just been dragged out of a swamp.
Oh, how awful.

But if the audio just became garbled or muffled, etc.:

So I went up to him because he looked [inaudible] out of a swamp.
I'm sorry, my connection must be bad. He looked what?
He looked like he had just been dragged out of a swamp.
Oh, how awful.
