What's a programmable mouse?

Also more commonly called a gaming mouse, a programmable mouse is essentially a desktop mouse with additional functions to make it suited to computer gaming and high intensity programming. These functions often include programmable buttons, higher sensitivity, adjustable weight and faster response times. Programmable mice use macros to assign a series of button clicks into one convenient hotkey.

What are macros?

Macros are sequences of events (such as keystrokes, mouse clicks, and delays) that can be recorded and later played back to help perform repetitive tasks. They can also be used to replay sequences that are long or difficult to execute.

Why should I get one?

I have found using one invaluable in saving time doing basic functions on the WorkHub, as well as saving my fingers from keystrokes. For example, for QA work on the WorkHub, I have the side buttons programmed to do Ctrl+1 (button '1'), Ctrl+2 (button '2'), etc., for speaker IDs. I have Fast Forward programmed in so that I don't have to use my keyboard hotkey or look for the button to click on the WorkHub page.

I only save a couple of seconds or a couple of keystrokes. What's the point?

You repeat those couple of seconds and couple of keystrokes over time and it all adds up. It really does, believe me. Any device, program, or app that saves your money-makers from added stress is a beneficial thing. In any given week, when I add it all up, I've saved my fingers from clicking/hitting well over 1,000 keys. Be it on the administration side or transcription/QA side, my fingers thank me every single day for these small shortcuts.

It looks complicated

You can get a programmable mouse with a minimal number of extra buttons to super-duper ones that have ton. It depends on what you feel comfortable with. I have a mouse that 18 programmable buttons x5 (different programs within the mouse). I have alternative programs for online work, offline work, designing work, etc. So many options and I'm always tweaking the buttons to suit my specific needs for a project.

In summary:

While you can get by without a programmable mouse, and many do, it makes your transcription life easier especially as a QA. Adding this device in your arsenal of hardware will save your fingers and make you more time-efficient, which is something we should all aspire to on this career path.

As always, you are your greatest asset. Be kind to yourself and the work will flow!
